FIRE Calculator
Enter your age, your retirement accounts, and what you plan to spend. You'll get the number you actually need to retire, plus which flavor of FIRE fits your situation.
The 25 comes from the 4% safe withdrawal rate. A portfolio that can safely pay out 4% a year has to be 25 times your annual spending, since 1 divided by 0.04 is 25.
The solid line is your projected account value, starting from what you have now and adding your annual contribution each year at your assumed return. The dashed line is your Traditional FIRE number. Each dot marks the age and amount where your projected value crosses one of the five FIRE numbers. This is a projection, not a promise, markets don't move in a straight line.
Which flavor of FIRE fits you
Your number above assumes you fully replace your current spending forever. Most people don't land exactly there. Here's how the main variants compare, using your numbers as the baseline.
| Type | Estimated number | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|
Lean and Fat estimates assume you'd cut spending to about 70% or raise it to about 150% of what you entered. Barista assumes part time work covers roughly half your spending. Adjust the inputs above and recalculate to see how sensitive each number is to your assumptions.
